when i was twenty years old, i had my ear pierced, and the first words from my mother's mouth when she saw my earring was, "why do you want to throw your life away?"
now, sixteen years later, her prophecy has come true. i am now a commmon criminal.
i went to dinner the other night with one of my neighbours, a raving drunk of a fashion maven, who is both hysterical and well-grounded at the same time. after a few hours of sitting, eating and drinking at the café that is in our building, we said our good-byes, and left. it wasn't until the the next morning that i realised the odd thing about the whole ordeal was that we didn't pay the bill. actually, we didn't even so much as ask for the bill. we simply stood up, as if at our own dining tables, and left. i was mortified. i was a dine-and-dasher.
now the only thing for certain is my mother will say, when she visits me in the pokey is, "i told you so! it's because you pierced your ear."
