correct me if i am wrong, but, um, baby jesus wasn't burned at the stake, was he? he was crucified, no? so if he was crucified and not burned at the stake, or even burned on the cross, what the hell do 'ash wednesday' and ashes smeared on one's forehead mean? is it because blood was too hard to come by in ancient times? or did the church not want to show people it had blood on it's hands? i suppose were i not a hellion when i was young and had i not been kicked out of confirmation by the priest, i might have all the answers.
anyway, it bothers me, ashes smeared on foreheads and a days called 'ash wednesday' 'palm sunday,' 'shrove tuesday' and 'next monday.' just so you know.

Ooh, ooh, Sister Mary orange.paper.bike! I know! I know! The ashes used on Ash Wednesday are made by burning leftover palm fronds from the previous year's Palm Sunday (they're vegetarian!). They are mixed with a little bit of olive oil (and delicious with a little parmesan) and smeared in the shape of a cross on our foreheads to publicly remind us that (a) we are sinners, (b) Christ went on a 40-day fast in the desert, and (c) when we die our bodies will return to the ashes from which we came (the priest says as he's anointing you, "thou art dust and unto dust you shall return"). It's a way of reminding us that we are mortal sinners and that Lent is a time of repentance and reflection. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of a 40-day period of abstinence and repenting that ends on Easter Sunday. I went to 12 years of Catholic school, so this stuff is pretty much hardwired into my brain.
BTW, the pronouns "we," "us," and "you" are rhetorical and not meant to be a reflection of you--you ash-hating, Satan-worshipping heretic.
Perhaps it was early mans first foray into cosmetics.
We all know that throughout history church leaders have not been without their drag!
Just a thought.

But if it wasn't for Shrove Tuesday, we wouldn't get Laskiaispullat and if it wasn't for Easter, we wouldn't get mämmi.
For me, it's all about food.
